Different carpet fibres need different care. Understand wool, nylon, polyester and solution-dyed carpets to choose and maintain the right one.
Wool is the gold standard for carpet fibre. It's naturally flame-resistant, hypoallergenic, and hides soil remarkably well thanks to its scaly fibre structure. Wool holds its appearance for decades and develops a rich patina rather than looking worn.
The trade-offs: wool is the most expensive fibre, can felt and fuzz under heavy traffic, and is sensitive to high-pH chemicals (bleach and ammonia cause permanent yellowing). Professional cleaning must use wool-safe, pH-balanced chemistry.
Wool Care:
Always look for the Woolsafe mark on any cleaning product used on wool carpet. Standard carpet cleaners are often too alkaline and can cause irreversible colour change.
Nylon is the most resilient synthetic fibre — it springs back from compression better than any other carpet fibre, making it ideal for high-traffic areas and stairs. It resists abrasion and holds its twist for decades.
Nylon's weakness is staining — it absorbs dye-based spills (coffee, wine, cordial) readily unless it has a stain-resist treatment. Solution-dyed nylon (where colour is locked into the fibre during production) overcomes this and is one of the most stain-proof options available.
The cleaning method, chemistry, temperature and drying approach must all be matched to the fibre. Using the wrong chemistry on wool can cause colour bleeding or yellowing. Over-wetting a polyester carpet can cause wicking (stains reappearing as it dries). Solution-dyed fibres tolerate aggressive stain treatment that would ruin wool.
This is why a professional pre-inspection identifies the fibre type before any cleaning begins. The wrong assumption — treating a wool rug like a synthetic carpet — is one of the most common causes of irreversible damage.
