Had a stain 'cleaned' only for it to reappear days later? That's wicking. Understand why it happens and how professional extraction stops it for good.
Wicking is the process by which a stain that was cleaned from the carpet surface reappears as the carpet dries. It happens when the original spill penetrated through the carpet into the underlay or subfloor. Surface cleaning removes the visible stain from the fibres, but the residue in the underlay is still there.
As the carpet dries, moisture evaporates from the surface and pulls moisture (carrying the dissolved stain) up from the underlay through the fibres — like a candle wick drawing wax. When the carpet is fully dry, the stain has returned to the surface.
The Tell-Tale Sign:
If a stain disappears after cleaning but comes back in the same spot 2–7 days later (once fully dry), it's wicking — the stain was never fully removed, just hidden in the underlay.
DIY hire machines and over-the-counter sprays are the most common cause of wicking. They apply water and cleaning solution to the surface but have insufficient extraction power to pull it back out. The excess liquid soaks through to the underlay, dissolving the original stain residue and spreading it wider.
When the carpet eventually dries (which takes much longer because of the over-wetting), the stain wicks back — often larger and more visible than before. The 'cleaning' has actually made the problem worse by driving the contaminant deeper.
Professional hot-water extraction uses high-pressure injection combined with powerful vacuum extraction. The key difference from DIY is the extraction power — professional equipment removes the water and dissolved soil from the carpet before it can soak through to the underlay.
For stains that have already penetrated the underlay, a professional may use a 'pad cleaning' or sub-surface extraction approach — flushing the underlay itself and extracting the contaminant from below. This is the only way to permanently remove a stain that has wicked multiple times.
