Leather needs a different care routine than fabric. Learn how to clean, condition and protect leather furniture to prevent cracking and staining.
Not all leather is the same, and using the wrong care method can cause permanent damage. Full-grain and top-grain leather have a protective finish and tolerate gentle cleaning. Aniline and semi-aniline leathers are unprotected, absorb liquids instantly, and stain easily. Nubuck and suede have a nap that requires brushing, never liquid cleaning.
Always check the manufacturer's care tag. If you're unsure, test any product on a hidden area and consult a leather specialist before attempting DIY cleaning.
Leather is a natural material that loses oils over time — especially in air-conditioned or heated rooms. As it dries out, it becomes brittle, develops creases, and eventually cracks. Conditioning every 6 months replenishes natural oils and keeps the leather supple.
Apply a thin, even layer of quality leather conditioner with a soft cloth, working it in with circular motions. Allow it to absorb for 15–20 minutes, then buff off any excess. Avoid silicone-based products — they create a surface coating that blocks the leather's pores.
Pro Tip:
Never place leather furniture in direct sunlight or within one metre of a heat source. UV and dry heat are the two biggest causes of premature cracking and fading.
On finished leather, spills sit on the surface for a short window. Blot immediately with a lint-free cloth — never rub, which can push liquid past the protective topcoat. For oil-based spills, sprinkle cornstarch to absorb, leave for an hour, then brush off gently.
On aniline and unprotected leathers, spills absorb instantly and can cause permanent stains. For these, professional intervention as soon as possible gives the best chance of removal. Don't attempt aggressive DIY cleaning on unprotected leather.
