Do carpets cause allergies or help them? Understand the science of carpets, dust mites and indoor air quality — and how professional cleaning fits in.
A common misconception is that hard floors are better for allergy sufferers. Research suggests the opposite: hard floors allow allergens to remain airborne and inhaled, while carpet fibres trap dust, pollen and pet dander, holding them out of the breathing zone until they're removed by vacuuming.
A landmark Swedish study found that when carpet use declined, allergy rates rose — contradicting the assumption that carpet causes allergies. The key insight: carpet acts as a filter, but only if it's maintained. A dirty, neglected carpet releases trapped allergens back into the air.
The Key Distinction:
Well-maintained carpet improves indoor air quality by trapping allergens. Neglected carpet worsens it by becoming a reservoir that releases allergens. The difference is maintenance, not the carpet itself.
Dust mites thrive in warm, humid environments and feed on shed skin cells. They live in mattresses, upholstery and carpet — anywhere their food supply accumulates. It's not the mites themselves but their waste particles that trigger allergic reactions.
Hot-water extraction (steam cleaning) is the most effective method for reducing dust mite allergen load in carpet. The combination of hot water (55°C+ kills mites) and extraction (removes the waste) provides relief that vacuuming alone cannot achieve.
HEPA vacuuming removes surface allergens, but the allergen load deep in the carpet pile and underlay requires professional extraction. Hot-water extraction flushes the pile, suspends the trapped allergens in solution, and extracts them out of the carpet entirely.
For allergy sufferers, the recommended professional cleaning interval is shorter — every 6 months rather than 12 — especially in homes with pets, carpet in bedrooms, or during peak pollen seasons.
