Separate fact from fiction on dust mites in carpet. Understand how they affect your health and what actually works to reduce the allergen load in your home.
Dust mites are microscopic arachnids (related to spiders) that feed on shed human skin cells. They thrive in warm (20–25°C), humid (above 50% RH) environments. Their primary habitats are mattresses, pillows, upholstered furniture and carpet — anywhere their food supply accumulates.
It's not the live mites but their waste particles (faecal pellets) that cause allergic reactions. A single mite produces up to 20 waste particles per day, and a typical mattress can contain millions of mites. These particles become airborne when disturbed and are inhaled, triggering asthma, rhinitis and eczema.
The Humidity Key:
Dust mites cannot survive below 50% relative humidity. A dehumidifier or air-conditioner maintaining humidity below 50% is one of the most effective — and most overlooked — dust mite controls.
A persistent myth is that removing carpet eliminates dust mites. In reality, dust mites live in mattresses and bedding in far greater numbers than in carpet. Removing carpet and replacing it with hard floors means the allergens that were trapped in the carpet are now airborne and inhaled instead.
Research consistently shows that well-maintained carpet traps allergens and keeps them out of the breathing zone, while hard floors allow them to circulate. The solution isn't removing the carpet — it's maintaining it properly with HEPA vacuuming and regular professional extraction.
Three interventions have strong evidence for reducing dust mite allergen load: humidity control (below 50%), thermal washing of bedding (60°C+), and professional hot-water extraction of carpets and upholstery. The combination of all three provides the greatest relief for allergy sufferers.
Hot-water extraction works because the water temperature (55°C+) kills live mites on contact, while the extraction vacuum physically removes the waste particles from the fibre. Chemical sprays that claim to kill mites don't remove the allergenic waste — so extraction is essential.
