A mattress absorbs sweat, skin cells and allergens every night. Learn how to protect, clean and sanitise your mattress for healthier sleep.
The average person sheds roughly half a kilogram of skin per year, and a significant portion of that ends up in the mattress. Combined with sweat (up to 200ml per night) and body heat, this creates an ideal environment for dust mites, bacteria and fungal spores.
Dust mites are the most common trigger for morning allergies, asthma and eczema. Their waste particles build up in mattress fibres over months and years, becoming airborne every time you move in your sleep.
Did You Know:
A mattress that hasn't been professionally cleaned in two years can weigh up to a kilogram more than when new — from accumulated skin cells, sweat salts, dust mites and their waste.
Strip the bed completely and vacuum the entire mattress surface using the upholstery attachment. Pay attention to seams and quilted channels where dust and skin cells collect. A thorough monthly vacuum removes the bulk of allergen load.
Rotate the mattress 180 degrees (head-to-foot) every month if it's single-sided, or flip and rotate if double-sided. This distributes body-weight compression evenly and prevents permanent body impressions.
A waterproof, breathable mattress protector is the single best investment in mattress hygiene. It blocks sweat, spills and skin cells from reaching the mattress, while allowing moisture vapour to escape so you don't sleep hot.
Even with a protector, professional mattress cleaning every 12–18 months is recommended. Professional extraction removes the deep allergen load, dust mite waste and body-oil build-up that household methods cannot reach — and sanitises with hot-water extraction that kills mites on contact.
